ITIN and taxes — file without an SSN
Updated: 2026-07-06
What is an ITIN?
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is issued by the IRS so you can file taxes when you don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN).
- Good for: filing taxes, opening accounts at some banks, building an income history.
- It does not grant work authorization or immigration status.
- Filing taxes builds a record that may help you in the future.
How to apply
- Fill out IRS form W-7 (available in Spanish).
- Submit it together with your tax return (not separately, with few exceptions).
- You need proof of identity: a valid passport (simplest) or a combination of other documents.
- Mail it, or better, use a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) or an IRS help center.
Free help (don’t overpay)
- VITA: IRS-certified volunteers prepare your taxes for free if your income is moderate. VITA sites operate across Iowa every tax season (January–April).
- Iowa Legal Aid has Spanish-language materials and free guidance.
- Beware of preparers promising “huge refunds” or charging a percentage of your refund — that’s a red flag.
