How to get your Iowa driver's license
Updated: 2026-07-06
First things first
- In Iowa, licenses are issued by the Iowa DOT (Department of Transportation).
- The written test is available in Spanish, and there is a free online practice test (link below).
- The driving (road) test requires an appointment.
What to bring
- Proof of identity — valid passport or birth certificate with certified translation.
- Social Security Number (SSN) — card or another official document showing it.
- Two proofs of Iowa residency — lease, utility bill, or bank statement (with your name and address).
⚠️ Every case is different. Before you go, confirm your situation on the Iowa DOT website or call your local station. This guide is informational, not legal advice.
The steps
- Study with the free online practice test (available in Spanish).
- Go to a DOT station with your documents (county treasurer offices in and near Ottumwa also issue licenses — search “driver’s license station” + your city).
- Pass the written test (you can ask for it in Spanish) and the vision screening.
- New drivers get an instruction permit first, or move on to the road test.
- Schedule and pass the road test. Bring a car with valid insurance and registration.
- Pay the fee and get your license.
Community tips
- If your name appears differently across documents, bring everything you have.
- Arrive early: small stations serve walk-ins first come, first served.
- No SSN? Your case needs individual review — check with Iowa Legal Aid first (free, Spanish available).
