Renting a home in Iowa
Updated: 2026-07-06
Before you sign
- Visit the place in person. Never send money for a rental you haven’t seen — it’s the most common scam in Facebook groups.
- Get the lease in writing and keep it. If it’s only in English, take time to review it with someone you trust.
- Ask what the rent includes: water? electricity? gas? trash? parking?
The security deposit
- In Iowa, the deposit cannot be more than 2 months’ rent.
- When you move in, take photos of everything (walls, carpet, bathroom, kitchen) and message them to the landlord — that’s your proof.
- When you move out, the landlord has 30 days to return your deposit or explain deductions in writing.
Your basic tenant rights
- The landlord must keep the home habitable: heat, water, electricity, no pests.
- The landlord cannot force you out on their own (changing locks, cutting power) — eviction requires a court process.
- Court papers don’t mean you leave the next day: you have the right to respond. Get legal help right away.
Where to get free help
- Iowa Legal Aid — free legal help for low-income Iowans, with Spanish materials.
- Discrimination based on origin or language is illegal (Fair Housing): you can report it.
