Pay a traffic or parking ticket
Updated: 2026-07-08
First: read your ticket
The ticket has the key info: the amount, the due date to pay, and whether you must appear in court. Read it carefully; if something isn’t clear, ask someone you trust or a lawyer.
Pay online
- Go to the Ottumwa Police payment portal (link below).
- Have your ticket / citation number ready.
- Enter the details and pay by card.
- Save the receipt.
Types of ticket
- Parking: almost always just paid.
- Traffic (speed, stop sign, etc.): can be paid, but adds points that raise your insurance.
- Some citations require a court appearance — if yours says so, don’t ignore it.
If you don’t pay
Ignoring a ticket can bring late fees, license problems, or a warrant in serious cases. If you can’t pay on time, call the court about options before it’s due.
Is it worth fighting?
- If you think the ticket is unfair, you can plead not guilty and go to court.
- For cases that affect your license or immigration status, talk to a lawyer before deciding. Iowa Legal Aid offers free guidance.
Amounts, points and deadlines depend on your ticket and the court. This guide is informational only, not legal advice.
